Mountain House
Sustainability is not just about recycling and re-using. It is also about designing for activity over a lifetime and building in a way that will stand that test of time.
The Mountain Hut is a low slung, load bearing wood structure constructed largely from surrounding forests due to its remote location. Sited as the trail head and bunk house for a National Park in California, the building planning is both accessible and sheltering. It is mindful of the windy, winter temperatures that descend on the Valley. Interior spaces are open and communal as a juxtaposition to the solitary nature of hiking - a design decision that encourages learning and communication among guests perhaps of the risks of a coming storm or the beneficial view of a particular hike.
The palette of materials are selected for their robustness, local abundance, and thermal efficiency to insure ease of repair and longevity. A massive, shaded south facing window harnesses sunlight in winter when occupants gather to eat with nature as a companion. Smaller windows in the bunk rooms balance natural ventilation and allows dappled light in.
