About | Method
Modh is the Gaelic word for method.
This word is a reflection of the studio founder’s Irish heritage and American upbringing. It underpins an architectural process that is methodical, deliberative, and respectful in its approach to client, building, and place. This method seeks to find particular answers to design problems using a thorough investigation of all aspects of the design and construction process. This process emphasizes a respectful engagement with construction professionals and an optimistic examination of the opportunities of great design solutions.
Inquiry Before Concept
We believe in first understanding a place and a problem before a concept can be found. Our process is tailored to each client and involves conversation, interview, research, and analysis to develop guidelines for the evolution of the design.
A Socratic Method
Our design process follows an inquisitive dialogue with our clients. We present successes and failures to our clients. This furthers our understanding of the priorities and values of the client and conversely enables a client to gain an appreciation for why the design takes the shape that it inevitably does.
The Unobserved Artifact
The combination of inquiry and engagement helps to reveal the Unobserved Artifact of the space. When working in existing buildings in particular, a space’s effectiveness is frequently stifled by the accumulation of older design decisions that responded to no longer relevant needs or conditions. We employ objective distance from a space, unlocking qualities and strengths that might otherwise be ignored.
Purpose
Buildings must function. Buildings become Architecture when Function is paired with Meaning. We believe that the simultaneous elevation of Meaning with Function enables a project to have Purpose. A building that has Purpose produces spaces that are more enjoyable, responsive, and flexible.
We like to Run Uphill
We like to work hard, we like resistance. Our process involves as many iterations as it takes to solve the problem. We share these iterations, successes and failures, with our clients to bring them along in the process - revealing why the design fits their needs. We like the slow, exertion of a good uphill climb rather than the ease of a downhill sprint.
