Chelsea Piers Bathrooms
As part of larger design upgrades of the event spaces throughout Chelsea Piers, the primary bathrooms of Pier 61 were targeted for an immediate upgrade that would reflect the overall design vision being implemented in phases. Maintaining the same footprint and infrastructural backbone, the design re-shapes the ceiling plane to mine as much vertical dimension as possible. Fields of hand-glazed green tile and warm, walnut wood details attempt to domesticate and “de-institutionalize” the long rooms.
Blackened steel details, modeled porcelain tiles cut in herring bone patterns, and ornamental light fixtures add a level of nuance to the rooms. An over-deep wooden frame wraps a field of bright tile, a flower vase, and a flush mirror that composes a still-life with the guest before returning to the Gala.
